writing

Writing a book usually takes a long time as there are so many drafts to be worked on before the final stage of publishing. So far, I have written four middle-grade books and two young adult novels. I like to work on two books at the same time, if possible. This means that while the first one is with my editor, I can work on the draft of the second book.

I don't have a set routine for writing. I just try to write as often as I can. With edits, though, I will work on them from early morning until late at night.

I like to write in two places in my house; the kitchen and the study. I like the kitchen because I can spread everything over the huge kitchen table and it's near the biscuit tin, but the study is much warmer.

I belong to a wonderful critique group which is run through SCBWI. As members, we take turns to look through each other's chapters and offer helpful suggestions. Critiquing is a brilliant way to improve your writing.

I am working on a middle-grade book at the moment which is called Houdilini's Son. It's a story set in Victorian times at a travelling circus. It is about my Great-great Uncle Arthur Margery who was a stage magician during this period. He was rumoured to have known Harry Houdini, the famous escapologist.

I have also written a picture book about a dragon who eats a teacher! It is early days as I still have lots of work to do on it. However, it is a lot of fun to write and completely out of my comfort zone.
